Smallwood Remodel + ADU

A homeowner in the Smallwood neighborhood of West Charlotte approached us to design an addition to her 1000 sf single family home, with an ADU in the rear yard for hosting friends and family. In order to preserve the community floodplain area and a lovely old magnolia tree in the front yard of the property, designing an addition that expands behind and beside the house that fits with the existing street view of the home was paramount. The watershed (floodplain) across the street is filled with beautiful trees that the homeowner wished to look out on, so a front porch became a core element of the design. The material palette was given a modern refresh with a contrasting black and white color scheme, which ties it together with the new ADU. The ADU takes advantage of the topography change with an extra tall entry and vaulted ceilings, making a tiny footprint feel quite spacious. With a homeowner who loves hosting and enjoying company, we’re excited to imagine the many gatherings and memories that will be made in these new spaces.
