Littles Landing Townhomes

The Littles’ Landing neighborhood  is comprised of duplexes and triplexes that Cone designed in partnership with Habitat For Humanity of the Charlotte Region. Little’s Landing honors a powerful legacy rooted in Charlotte’s history, named for the Little family whose land became a symbol of resilience and opportunity. The Little family, once sharecroppers and enslaved people on the land that is now known as Polk and White Road, was gifted approximately 33 acres at an extremely low price by their former slave owners—a rare act of redemption, though far short of the “40 acres and a mule” once promised.

In the Summer of 2023, the Unified Development Ordinance was passed in Charlotte, North Carolina, which unlocked new possibilities in housing types and will lead to greater density on single family lots. The challenge of this project was to respect the existing neighborhood context while pushing boundaries of what is possible for affordable housing design. The aesthetic of this project was inspired by our West Coast roots as we incorporated modern elements like the contemporary color palate, playful material transitions, and architectural shroud elements on the front facade, yet this project nods to tradition by utilizing gable roof form, craftsman features, and traditional Southern front porches. The Cone Charlotte Team cannot wait to see these collaborative efforts come to life!
